Carmichael Recreation and Park District offers a wide variety of classes built to cater to the needs of the community. From dog obedience, to pottery, fitness and line dancing, there is something for everyone! Check out our current class offerings below.

Beginning Sign Language
Fee: $40 (R)/ $44 (NR)

Students learn basic, common etiquette signs and everyday signs to communicate with the deaf and hard of hearing. Upon completion, students will have basic skills and can take future classes.

Dog Obedience
Fee: $100 (R)/$110 (NR) 7 weeks

Does your dog need discipline? Help your pet understand what you want by learning basic commands such as heel, sit, come, down, stay and more! Dogs or puppies must be at least 4 months old and have all their DHLPP and Rabies shots. Please Note: Proof of vaccines must be presented on the first day of class.

First Aid & Adult, Child & Infant CPR
Fee: $55 (R)/$61 (NR) + $25 lab fee payable to instructor at class

This 8-hour class is a basic training course in emergency care for infants and children. There are also adult essential skills included along with AED training. This class meets State EMSA and Pediatric CPR and First Aid Child Care Provider Requirements. Certifications are good for two years.

Finish Your Quilting, Sewing & Stitching Camp
Fee: $25 (R)/$28 (NR). Materials fee vary by project from $0-$45 payable to instructor

One Thousand Threads is hosting a “Finish Your Projects” sewing and quilting class. Bring a partially finished project – it doesn’t matter if it was started in another class, with another teacher, or on your own. Bring your project and we’ll help you get it finished! If you don’t have an unfinished project to bring, you can start a new one from one of our kits. If starting a project from one of our kits. If starting a project from one of our kits (kits $10 – $45) all materials will be included in the kit. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Note: Basic sewing equipment will be used including irons, machines and needles. Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced sewers welcome! We can help you with: Applique, piecing, quilting, garments & accessories, stuffed toys, embroidery, and needlepoint.

Introduction To Guitar
Fee: $150 (R)/$165 (NR) 12 weeks; $10 materials fee due at first class

This 12-week introductory class will teach students tuning, playing position, musical symbols, notes in first position, rhythms through eighth notes, chords, reading, scales, finger-picking, strumming and simple repertoire. The class is accompanied with a Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1, which comes with a CD including 47 full band tracks for demonstration or play along. Students must have a guitar (nylon string acoustic guitars are recommended to facilitate the fingerpicking lessons). The Sacramento Guitar Society will offer a loaner guitar, with a refundable security deposit of $100.

Come have fun playing in the mud! Experience one of the most ancient and relaxing art forms while learning different techniques and creating your own work of art. Hand building and wheel throwing will be offered. The emphasis of the class is placed on fun and exploring your creative side. All levels are welcome.

This open studio time is for students who have previously taken adult pottery class with Michelle. Studio is open registration and participants can sign up at any time by purchasing a punch card. One class equals 2 hours of in studio time; punch cards are good for four classes and expire 60 days from date of purchase.

Mandalas for Meditation

This is an ongoing class for those with little to no line dance experience. Steps are tailored for seniors, as necessary. Class is graduated into three levels at thirty minutes each and students choose levels as their ability progresses.

Sweat, smile, move and groove in the modern evolution of the beloved children’s toy-the hula hoop! Learn how to get a great full-body toning and cardiovascular workout with a smile on your face. We bring handmade hoops for all ages and abilities to enjoy in each class. We will work on a variety of drills and skills to challenge every level of hoop, from beginner to advance.

Beginning Tap for Seniors

This new class targeted for seniors, is the perfect introduction to beginners level tap dance choreography. This hour long class will consist of learning the basic steps of tap dance, including ball change, toe-heel combinations, flap ball change, shuffle ball change, buffalo and three point turns. Tap shoes required by week 2 of class.

Cardio Dance

Song to song exercise that features multiple styles of music and dance, designed to give you a cardio interval workout, this 50 minute format allows for maximum fun and maximum calorie burn! Participants should wear comfortable clothing.

This class is for all adult ages and includes Chi Gong stretching, limbering and breathing exercises as well as a Tai Chi form based on “Yang Tai Chi” style movements. This class may help reduce risks of falling, improve balance and enhance overall health and mental well-being.

Learn the ancient art of making Ukrainian Easter Eggs, called “Pysanky” as you practice this wax-resistant technique handed down through generations. This class will briefly cover the history, culture and symbolism of this ancient art while you work on your own eggs. No previous experience is necessary.

Trypillian Egg Decoration

This unique style reminiscent of America’s southwest is inspired by 6000 year old Trypillian culture from Western Ukraine. Students apply layers of wax and dye to create wonderful rhythmic designs on an egg. No previous experience is necessary.
